My story
While friends and colleagues were settling into careers or heading off on their OE in Europe, I quit my job as a young journalist, grabbed a backpack, and flew to Africa with my wife, Sue — on a one-way ticket.
Eight months later, after travelling from Cape Town to Cairo on less than NZ$10 a day, I returned home with a changed outlook, a passion for stories of resilience, and a lifelong commitment to the underdog.
Through decades of adventure and work as a journalist, political press secretary, news director and volunteer, I’ve witnessed the growing disparities in wealth and power that shape the modern world — from the orderly streets of London to the chaotic bus stations of Kenya, the seductive dazzle of Times Square to the dirt-floor poverty of Timor-Leste.
That perspective underpins all my fiction.

Researching and writing these books has been a source of joy, challenge, and discovery — and I look forward to sharing that journey with readers. Between adventures, Sue and I live in Aotearoa New Zealand with our feisty Border Terrier, Harvey.
